David J. Mitchell's work on the statues for Glasgow’s £40m Citizens Theatre redevelopment showcases the power of collaboration and sensitive design. Tasked with installing these intricate works, Mitchell coordinated with Architects, crane operators, transportation specialists, structural engineers, the theatre’s committees amongst others to address challenges posed by the statues’ size and fragility. Transported of the works from his Bellshill studio in 2020, well ahead of their scheduled installation atop the façade in 2024, the statues’ journey demonstrated meticulous planning and foresight.
Key to the project’s success was consultation with Historic Environment Scotland, ensuring the statues honored their historical integrity while incorporating modern techniques. This balance of tradition and innovation maintained the cultural and architectural significance of the Citizens Theatre, a cornerstone of Glasgow’s artistic heritage.
Structural engineers played a vital role in designing secure mounting systems, ensuring stability during installation and compliance with safety standards. Mitchell’s collaboration with these technical experts was instrumental in seamlessly integrating the statues into the theatre’s façade while enhancing its overall renovation.
The redevelopment team worked closely to align Mitchell’s contributions with the Citizens Theatre broader architectural enhancements, showcasing a unified vision for this landmark. Guided by Mitchell’s artistic expertise and supported by a multidisciplinary team, the project harmonized craftsmanship, engineering, and cultural sensitivity.
This careful orchestration ensures the statues not only celebrate the theatre’s historic legacy but also create a lasting inspiration for future generations.
